What is the appeal of restoring antique hot rods like Ford Coupes from the 1930’s?

Several magazines are devoted to this subject, like "Hot Rodz" and "Deluxe Car Kulture". It seems like alot of complicated work. Have you ever worked on antique cars or known a person who does this? What do they like about it?
